Why students are coming to INCITE – and why you should care

Students are coming to MYOB INCITE 2017. Why?

Who needs their unwashed, bearded, braided appearance at an accounting roadshow?

As it turns out, we all do.

We all know what they’re like, right?

They drink too much, shower too little, know everything there is to know about life because someone once gave them some fourth-hand copies of books from Nietzsche and Descartes.

All braided hair, henna tattoos and the sense of entitlement that only comes off the back of a Mum and Dad–funded trip around Southeast Asia, trying to find themselves.

Yeah, students, we all know what they’re like.

Or at least I thought I did before I actually met one.

The Basil impact

Then a few months ago, in walks Basil to the MYOB office. Just a kid, fresh out of uni.

He was (and arguably still is) a little bundle of unkempt hair, circulation-killing trousers and a face that was quite obviously no longer on speaking terms with his razor.

‘Here we go’, I thought, time to find some busy work for the work experience kid.

And someone did, and off he went.

What we got back wasn’t a re-stocking of our left-handed screwdrivers or tins of tartan paint though.

What we got back was a research project that had a genuine and lasting impact on our communications strategy.

Say what now?

When he was done with that he dived head first into working on the launch of the new MYOB brand.

Then some work with our digital marketers, then our content marketers. Everywhere he goes this guy leaves a trail of fresh ideas and rave reviews.

Could it be that the kids are alright after all?

Why you should like students after all

That’s nice, but what’s the point I hear you ask.

Well, this year, for the first time, we’re inviting students to join us at INCITE, and I advise, nay, implore you to introduce yourself to them.

Like it or not, these guys and girls, especially those conscientious enough to attend an event like INCITE, are the accountants, bookkeepers and small business owners of tomorrow.

You don’t want to be reading another blog post like this in a few years’ time about the amazing work another Basil is doing for your competitors or about the amazing idea a Basil has had that is changing your industry before your eyes.

Trust me.

Take the opportunity at INCITE if not to bag yourself a Basil, then at least have a chat and get to know one. You won’t regret it.

Their personal hygiene is much better than you’ll remember too…
