Changes to online payments and surcharging

Summary

  • If you enable surcharging on your online payments, the 25c transaction fee will now also be passed on to your customers in addition to the 1.8% surcharge (excluding BPAY)

  • You can choose to exclude BPAY as a payment option on your online invoices

What you need to know

Starting early August 2024, we’re providing customers more flexibility and control with online payments. Previously you could only pass on the 1.8% surcharge to customers who pay your invoices online using cards and digital wallets (excluding BPAY).

After this change, you’ll be able to:

  • pass on the 1.8% surcharge plus the 25c transaction fee to your customers (excluding BPAY), and

  • exclude BPAY as a payment option.

You can still manage your default payment options via your online payments settings page and customise them on a per invoice basis.

This means that if you turn surcharging on and choose to exclude BPAY payments, you can pass on all costs associated with online payments to your customers.

GST on surcharges

If there's GST on a customer's invoice and you pass on the card surcharge (25c + 1.8%), there will also be GST on the surcharge. If there's no GST on the invoice, there will be no GST on the surcharge.

This means the customer will pay the surcharge GST and you'll collect it when the payment is deposited into your bank account. This GST will be treated the same as any other GST collected by your business.

How it will look

Your default payment options will still be in the same place but will be updated for the changes. See your payment options.

When this change happens, Accept BPAY payments will be on by default. You can change this if you want.

Your default payment options will apply to all invoices, but you can change them on a per invoice basis.

Just click Edit on the invoice.

Here’s what the payment options on an invoice will look like:

There’s nothing you need to do

This change will happen automatically, but you can change your default payment options.
