On the Sunshine Coast, you’ll find DSQ Land Surveyors, a land surveying company that has carved a name for itself in housing development, infrastructure and mining projects. In the last six years, the company has grown significantly — its employee count has increased from 25 to 70, and it now has four offices across Queensland.
As DSQ scaled its operations, one thing quickly became clear. It had outgrown its existing accounting software and needed a solution that could scale with the business’ growth. DSQ’s financial controller, Peter Erskine, explains how upgrading to MYOB Acumatica will fully allow the company to take advantage of future growth opportunities.
DSQ outgrew software capabilities
From the start, MYOB has been part of DSQ’s business journey. The company first implemented MYOB AccountRight, “but as we started to grow and had more people in various areas, the requirements for our systems changed,” Peter says.
MYOB AccountRight had served the company well, but after a steep growth phase, it had outgrown the software’s capabilities.
Peter explains that while researching ERP options, they came across Momentum Software Solutions — an MYOB Implementation Partner based in the same area as DSQ.
After discussions and demonstrations with the Momentum team, DSQ was confident that MYOB Acumatica was the right system for them.

“We needed a complete, integrated system — a cloud-based ERP solution that was easy for everyone in the business to use, could handle project-based work, and consolidated all our financial information and processes in one platform. And that’s what we have with MYOB Acumatica,” Peter says.
Peter says having local support from Momentum was, and continues to be, invaluable.
“Working with Momentum in person during the initial stages was crucial. They helped us design the system, understand our needs, customise the setup to fit our workflow, migrate data and train employees.”

Nicholas Wood, a software consultant at Momentum, explains that the build and implementation process involved a lot of customisation.
“There’s a lot of discovery, and some tricky parts we worked on around the use of time, billing through projects and also matching reporting,” he explains. “So there’s a lot of custom work and progress reports to allow for, which the system didn’t initially have. That was information that Peter couldn’t get prior to implementing Acumatica.”
New functionality in a familiar format
As Peter explains, shifting to MYOB Acumatica meant gaining new functionality without moving into a completely new software system.
“I guess our familiarity with MYOB helped, even though it was a different system,” he explains. “I think the fact that it was customised for the Australian and New Zealand environments and business helped.”
The choice of MYOB has paid off, with DSQ making the most of automation, payroll tools and workforce management features. While Peter liked the idea of the project tracking function when they were scoping out solutions, DSQ hasn’t fully explored this feature.
“I guess a bit of irony is that one of the features we liked was the project feature, but it’s one we haven’t fully utilised,” he laughs. “So that’s something we need to look at. Keeping track of time allocation and cost allocation for various jobs is pretty important, so that feature is one I can see has a lot of advantages.”
While project tracking may still be on the cards, DSQ is taking advantage of other built-in features.
Automated workflows save hours of time
Another significant shift has been transitioning from manual processes to automated workflows, particularly in timesheet approvals, leave requests and invoicing.
Alongside MYOB’s workforce management software and cloud payroll management, “MYOB Acumatica’s automated workflows have been real time-savers,” Peter says.
“Once an employee has completed their time card for the week, they submit it, and it automatically goes to their manager for approval. Same with leave requests and creditors’ invoices.”

DSQ’s admin, finance and project teams can all access MYOB Acumatica from anywhere — whether in the office or at a job site — has helped eliminate operational roadblocks that were slowing down payroll processing and financial reporting.
“Since we implemented MYOB Acumatica, it has saved us at least a couple of hours every payroll cycle, over the years, that’s not an insignificant amount of time,”

It also means people spend less time on manual data entry, freeing them to focus on value-added tasks.

As DSQ enters its tenth year of business, Peter says MYOB will play a key role in helping the company achieve its ambitious goals.
The company is aiming to further integrate MYOB Acumatica’s project management features to optimise job costing further, as well as incorporating Velixo for more dynamic financial reporting.
